March 9 is widely celebrated as Barbie’s birthday. On this day in 1959, Barbie made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Created by Ruth Handler for Mattel, Barbie was one of the first dolls designed to represent an adult woman with a career, fashion, and independence.
For this photoshoot I wanted to create a simple birthday tribute using Happy Birthday Barbie as part of my Life in 1:6 Scale photography project. The goal was to capture the feeling of a miniature celebration while also recognizing Barbie’s long history in pop culture.
More than sixty years later, Barbie is still one of the most recognizable dolls in the world. This shoot felt like a fun way to celebrate that history through miniature photography.
