My tribute to the First Lady of Song
For this photoshoot I wanted to create a small tribute to Ella Fitzgerald using the Ella Fitzgerald Barbie. As part of my Life in 1:6 Scale photography project, I’m always looking for ways to combine doll photography with cultural icons and storytelling. For the photos, I wanted the images to feel elegant and timeless, similar to classic jazz portraits. The focus was on keeping the scene simple so the doll and her styling could stand out. Her gown, microphone, and stage-inspired look already carry so much visual history that the setup didn’t need to be overly complicated.
Lighting was especially important for this shoot. Classic jazz photography often uses dramatic lighting that highlights the performer while leaving the background softer and darker. I tried to recreate that feeling so the image would feel like a tiny stage performance captured in a portrait.
One of the things I enjoy about doll photography is how it allows you to reinterpret history in miniature form. With 1:6 scale photography, you can build a scene that references a real moment or cultural figure while still keeping it playful and creative.
This Ella Fitzgerald Barbie photoshoot was a chance to combine music history with miniature portrait photography. It’s a reminder that even in 1:6 scale, you can still capture a sense of performance and stage presence.
