Hot Hot Hot!

For this shoot I photographed Red Hot Diva Barbie as part of my Life in 1:6 Scale project. I wanted the image to feel inspired by Old Hollywood portraits, with dramatic lighting and a simple stage-like backdrop.

The inspiration came from the doll herself. Red Hot Diva Barbie has red details in her dress and red tipped hair, so I built a curtain backdrop using crushed red velvet fabric to match those colors. The fabric was pleated and clipped onto a backdrop stand so it would look like classic theater curtains.

I used a spotlight style lighting setup to give the image that vintage Hollywood feel. The light falls directly on the doll while the curtains stay darker in the background, which helps create depth and drama in the scene.

One of the things I enjoy about 1:6 scale photography is how much control you have over every detail. Even small changes to the lighting or camera angle can completely change the mood of the image. For this setup, the red curtains, dramatic lighting, and styling of the doll all came together to create a miniature Old Hollywood moment.
